Hey Im only Human after all *smiles* have a wonderful rest of the week everyone!! Leon Ford Jr.- A case of mistaken identity and on Nov 11, 2012 his life definitely changed forever. He was shot by a Pittsburgh police officer in what was said to be a "routine traffic stop". To add insult to injury his parents rushed to the hospital only to be denied access to see their child, for seven whole days.in the words of his parents they waited in "shock and confusion". It wasn't until later that they learned their 19 year old teenage son was detained by 3 officers on a dark road for over 20 minutes. Routine? Also the video shows that Leon provided the officers with his identification and proper paperwork. However in the video you hear the officers discuss the possiblitiy that Leon Ford is actually another Black young man that shares the same first initial and last name. In the video you see there are 2 officers at his driver door and another at the passenger door as the car begins to move the officer on the passenger side goes against protocol and jumps into the vehicle with Leon stating that he saw a "bulge" in his pants. Next you hear the awful sounds of five shots and the car slows to a stop. Now you may ask yourself why did Leon pull off? Well I think if I were a 19 year olde teenager cornered by 3 white officers on a dark road and they are accusing me if being someone I am not.... I may be afraid for my LIFE, which it appears he was correct to fear for his life in this situation. But that's it you say right...he survived... He's not another Trayvon Martin right?!? WRONG! Not only was he shot and now he is paralyzed from the waist down but to add insult to injury Leon is facing 20 years in prison! How is this fair? It's not.... So what is the next step?.... I came across this ADORABLE video while I was browsing online today ... I wanted to share with all the MOMS!How did the tradition of Black History Month begin? In 1926, a man by the name of Carter G Woodson introduced to America "Negro History Week". It wasn't until the 20th century that Black history earned a place in the history books. Later on Dr. Woodson's week of celebration turned into a monthly tradition that we hold on to each year. Dr. Woodson was born to ex-slave parents and he enrolled in high school at the age of 20, and after 2 years he earned a phD from Harvard. It was then that Dr. Woodson saw an overwhelming need to have Black History integrated in a way that would show the accomplishments of successful blacks and pivotal moments in our history that brought us to the current moment. Woodson began The Association for the study of Negro life and history back in 1915 (now called the Assoc. For the study of Afro-American Life and history), then in 1916, he founded the Journal of Negro History. So by 1926, his goal was to launch this week as a way to show the many accomplishments by blacks to this point and that began a tradition that would last forever. We have Dr. Woodson to thank for the opportunity to take time each month and celebrate the accomplishments of important black figures and to study all of those pivotal moments that changed Blacks lives in America forever. We owe this man a great deal, and not just as Blacks but as an entire country, an entire world. He opened the doors for everyone to be educated and know that all of the stereotypes and generalizations about us as an entire race are not always true. There are many black leaders and artists, musicians, activists, scholars and more! So I encourage you everyday this month, go and seek out an answer, find out something about a black that totally changed the world forever and be enlightened. That is after all what this month is for. Happy Black History Month |
